It’s again a big achievement for Indore! This year the Union government’s Cleanliness Survey has hailed Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital in the Swachh Survekshan 2018. But, this time around, Indore has beaten around 4,200 cities to grab this coveted spot.

So, how has Indore risen to the top in terms of cleanliness is grabbing eyeballs of every other city in India? Swachh Bharat I believe is greater than a campaign, it is fast becoming a mass movement aimed at social change. In the Central government’s cleanliness survey, Indore today emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh.

In the survey, Jharkhand has been adjudged as the best-performing state, followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, said a statement by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.

We Indoris definitely love to brag about our city, just ask anyone who has had an Indori friend and he/she would definitely agree. The association of Mahatma Gandhi’s glasses with the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ had already sent a clear message, cutting across various divides that still exist in the Indian society.

The IMC especially placed great emphasis on waste segregation and door-to-door collection.

So instead of “adding” dustbins, the city moved towards the more novel concept of a bin less city and removed over 1,400 bins.

Earlier, in the absence of door-to-door collection, residents had no choice but to put their garbage in plastic bags and then throw them into public dustbins – more often than not, throwing the bags around the bin rather than inside it.

To further encourage participation, the IMC incentivized innovative solutions and practices through competitions and awards from the mayor and the municipal commissioner.

So, We had the opportunity to interact with some of the officers and ground staff from the health department of the IMC and each one’s dedication was admirable.

Most of the “darogas” go on their daily patrol early morning with their wireless device and constantly keep a track of all the municipal trucks and sweepers; the exercise almost reminds you of a military drill.

Indore has successfully set itself apart from the usual lack of political will and blame games among different departments.

The “foreign-like” state, as said by a number of its residents, is not only the result of technology and the manpower employed, but also the collaboration between the government (at both the state and city levels), non-state actors (non-governmental organizations and commercial establishments) and citizens. The slogan “milkar ye sankalp kare, Indore ko swachh banana hai” (let’s pledge together to make Indore clean) beautifully captures the spirit of the drive.

There are constant drives to make citizens aware of the health hazards of spitting, public urination and littering with the help of radio FM, TV advertisement, jingles, and newspapers. Slogans have been painted on 1.5 lakh square meters of wall space across the city.

So, It’s hard to see a wall without a message painted. And the impact of this massive campaign is visible. During my four-day stay in the city, I could hardly see anyone littering or urinating in public. which make Indore more attractive and clean.

To make the city garbage free, 1,400 dustbins removed. Reason? People would dump garbage into plastic bags and throw in the dustbin.  As per The Indore Municipal Corporation, the city generates 50,000 kilos of municipal waste every day and out of which 13,000 kilos are a plastic waste. To tackle Indore’s waste problem the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) set up a Plastic Collection Centre.
